With the release of Black Adam, Henry Cavill is officially back as Superman / Clark Kent in the DC Universe. Cavill’s first portrayal of the superhero role was in 2013’s Man of Steel, followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Speaking of Justice League, the 2017 movie, whose directing job was later helmed by Joss Whedon, faced much criticism. One of the significant drawbacks of the movie was its CGI, especially when fans noticed Cavill’s CGI mustache removal for Superman.

The Enola Holmes star had grown a mustache for his role as August Walker in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and was not allowed to shave his facial hair until the film was finished due to contractual obligations. However, the Justice League reshoots took place simultaneously.

Fallout director Chris McQuarrie revealed on the Empire Podcast that when the news of Justice League reshoots broke, the new director of the Justice League, Whedon, called him and asked him to shave Cavill’s mustache.

And when McQuarrie talked about this topic with the Fallout‘s producer, he demanded $3 million from the DC team and promised to put the Tom Cruise starring movie on hold for a while so that Cavill would have enough time to re-grow his mustache.

However, the DC team bailed out from that offer. Thus, the Justice League team decided to keep the mustache and use CGI to remove the lip crawler in every reshot scene digitally. But the job was handled poorly, and people noticed the editing, which turned into a controversy.

And that became one of the many reasons why people disliked Whedon’s version of Justice League and demanded a director’s cut from the original director Zack Snyder, who stepped down from the movie after the unfortunate passing of his adopted daughter, Autumn Snyder.

Furthermore, many Cavill’s fans disliked his appearance in Justice League as the actor’s face had an uncanny valley quality in certain film scenes. And the fans’ wishes to see a good Justice League movie were fulfilled with the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021.

The 2017 Justice League was a disaster, and Cavill also didn’t seem happy with the movie and its reshoots. And around a year later, the English actor seemingly mocked the production issues caused by his daring facial hair.

On March 21, 2018, he posted a short clip of himself via his Instagram handle, where he was seen without his mustache. “ShavedButNotForgotten,” he captioned his post. And within the video, he had a message for his fans.

He said, “Oh, hello. Don’t be alarmed: It’s me, Henry Cavill, sometimes superhero and former secret agent. But now, I am completely clean-shaven. I know, it’s hard to recognize me without KingStache.”

“Sometimes, I even have trouble recognizing myself. It’s hard for me to admit: This is not CGI. He’s really gone,” Cavill said. “I can tell you this, though: I will remember him, always,” he concluded.

In the comment section, some people said that Cavill looked more handsome with the mustache. One person wrote, “you crack me up,” whereas another user commented, “Still looking at me through the mirror haha.”

And it seems Cavill also misses his mustache. Nonetheless, the actor is pleased with what happened, despite the trouble his mustache caused. He said, “If I was going to grow a mustache, it had to be a mustache that would change the world, and I’m glad it was.”

He continued, “I’ve been putting up with it for a year, I’ve grown to love it, and now I miss it. I’m glad it received so much media attention and everything because if I ever grow a mustache again. I’ll be able to look back and know that there will be so many videos and memes and Instagram posts, whatever it may be, to remind me of what it was like..”

Henry Cavill’s fans adore his physical appearance

Cavill stands 6′ 1″ tall and has blue eyes with a brown tinge, but true fans know one of them has a touch of brown.

With his dashing appearance, the actor has amassed 22.7 million Instagram followers. He has 538 posts in total, where he usually posts pictures of himself and his work.
