Canadian electronic music producer and DJ Deadmau5 primarily produces progressive house music. He also makes and DJs other electronic music genres, including techno and Zimmerman.

Deadmau5 is blessed with excellent skills in electronics. He has worked with several famous DJs and producers, including Kaskade, Wolfgang Gartner, Rob Swire, and Chris Lake.

Likewise, the producer has worked with Steve Duda in the group BSOD and was a member of the group WTF? along with Duda, Tommy Lee, and DJ Aero I. He is well-known for his signature helmet and popular live performances.

1. Joel Thomas Zimmerman is professionally known as Deadmau5

In 2002, Zimmerman was known as the dead mouse guy after telling people in an Internet chat room that he had discovered a dead mouse in his computer. 

He changed his name to Deadmouse in an online chat room that day, but it was too long, so he shortened it to Deadmau5. Maus is the German word for mouse, pronounced the same as in English; the ending character 5 instead of an ‘s’ is a form of leet.

In 2013, Zimmerman tried to trademark his Deadmau5 logo in the United States, but the Walt Disney Company rejected the claim the following year. As a result, the producer created the mouse helmet he wore in his music video and performance.

2. Joel Thomas Zimmerman has been interested in music since he was a child

Zimmerman was born on January 5, 1981, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. His mother, Nancy, is a visual artist, and his father, Rodney Thomas, works at a General Motors plant.

The producer grew up alongside his two siblings, Jennifer (older) and Chris (younger). His ancestors come from Germany, Switzerland, and England.

When he was a teenager, he received his first keyboard for Christmas. Zimmerman graduated from Niagara Falls’ Westlane Secondary School. He then worked as a programmer for an online music licensing company.

4. Deadmau5 divorced Kelly Fedoni after four years of marriage

The DJ was once married to his wife, Kelly Fedoni, and their wedding took place before their family and close friends in 2017. Deadmau5 and his wife are divorced now — they split after nearly four years of marriage in June 2021.

The news of their separation was announced on Instagram. The statement read, “After three and a half years of marriage, Joel Zimmerman [Deadmau5] and his wife Kelly Zimmerman are legally separating. Their decision to terminate their marriage is amicable.”

The statement continued, “‘We have chosen different paths in lives, and I am forever grateful for the time we spent together,’ shares Joel Zimmerman. ‘We wish each other well and are parting with love and mutual respect,’ adds Kelly Zimmerman.”

Fedoni also posted the same statement via her Instagram handle with an additional message in the caption. Her caption read, “Relationships don’t always work out, but there’s still so much LOVE between us. Please be kind to us during this process.”

“Choosing to end our marriage doesn’t make the relationship a failure; loving Joel is one of the best things I’ve ever had the privilege of doing in this life. I’m forever grateful for the kind and brilliant man he is.”

“Wishing him all the love and success on the rest of his journey through life. Sending all of you love that I hope you can send us right back,” her caption concluded.

5. Deadmau5 has a huge following on Instagram

Deadmau5 is active on his social media handles. As of this writing, he has garnered over 2.8 million followers on Instagram, where he usually posts photos of himself at work and with his friends. He also has a self-titled YouTube channel with over 1.77 million subscribers.
