A movie is not just about the actors we see on-screen. There are many creative hands behind the scenes to make the film happen.

Albert Omstead was one of the men who made Netflix’s Cobra Kai a success, not as an actor but from behind the scenes. Viewers see Omstead’s name appear several times throughout the end credits.

Omstead, a production assistant, and the news of his terrible death attracted much media interest. Here is what happened to him and more information on the late Albert Omstead.

What happened to Albert Omstead?

On July 19, 2021, Omstead passed away tragically because of a bizarre event at his Atlanta home. The sad events occurred after he returned from working on the Cobra Kai set. He arrived home and started repairing a leak in the garage.

A retaining wall unexpectedly collapsed and crashed on top of him as he fixed the garage leak. The rubble from the garage retaining wall imprisoned Omstead, causing the production expert to succumb to his injuries, as mentioned in The Sun.

According to Scott Wachtel, the deceased’s brother-in-law, told 11 Alive, “Instantaneously, the entire thing just collapsed on top of him.”

“The garage door was closed and there was a van parked right here (in front of garage), so he couldn’t run this way (towards garage), he couldn’t run away from garage because the rest of the wall was collapsing over here, so he had nowhere to go,” he further told the outlet.

Omstead was a husband and a father. He was married to Que. The 38-year-old, at the time, died due to his injuries, leaving behind his parents, Larry and Imelda Omstead; two sisters, Ruthie Wachtel and Jenny Pampalon; and wife, Que.

Additionally, he has five children, Frankie, Rowan, Liam, Aidan, and Nev, out of whom four are his stepchildren. His biological son was only 2 then, and he loved all his children very much. He was a loving and devoted father.

“It saddens me to think that he’s so young that he probably won’t even remember his dad beyond pictures and videos,” said Wachtel about his very young nephew who lost his father.

According to Wachtel, the man was their rock because “he supported their needs and put them first, whether it be emotionally, financially, everything.”

“His children were the center of his universe,” Wachtel shared with the 11 Alive. The brother-in-law further shared, “Had he gone out there five minutes earlier or five minutes later, our world would be entirely different place right now.”

Furthermore, Omstead’s wife, now a widow, stated that she would not have survived the two weeks after her husband’s untimely death without the help of her family, neighbors, and children.

Netflix on Albert Omstead’s death

Omstead has worked on several Netflix shows and other streaming service television projects, including Stranger Things, Atlanta, The Walking Dead, Sweet Magnolias, and Creepshow.

There is a gofundme page set up by Ruth Wachtel to help the Omstead family go through this dark time. However, a fan critiqued this step by tweeting, “The guy died at home; he worked at Cobra Kai. Still, the family has to ask for help on the internet.”

On the other hand, Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo paid homage to the fallen cameraman via Instagram. He captioned the post, “Sending love and prayers to the Omstead family.”

“A funny, caring, hard working, firecracker of a man. Sending love to his wife, Que, and to his five kids. He is a prime example of the incredible, And massive community it takes to make a show like this,” the actor continued.

He worked in the show’s Camera and Electrical Departments. Furthermore, Cobra Kai honored the crew worker in his loving memory at the beginning of season 4 episode 7, with a title card that read, “Albert Omstead 1982-2021 in memoriam.”
