They believe that the legislation would give the government more power to select judges, including those for Netanyahu’s corruption trial. Further, they would be allowed to vote down Supreme Court decisions and eliminate judicial review of legislation.
The proposed changes mean that “there is no legal boundary to the government,” stated Aeyal Gross, a constitutional and international law professor at Tel Aviv University. He added that a government without limits “undermines any idea of democracy.”
The premier even fired Yoav Gallant, his defense minister and a member of his Likud party, after he called on the government to stop the plan. Meanwhile, workers at airlines, hospitals, universities, and elsewhere held a general strike on Monday, paralyzing much of the economy.

The issue has split the country, especially the religiously conservative factions and the liberal, secular Israelis. It has set off one of the biggest social unrests in decades.
In an address to the nation, the PM announced on Monday, March 27, that he would postpone the proposed overhaul, suggesting the need for a compromise to prevent “a civil war.”
Although the delay was welcomed by the country’s president and some trade unions, some protesters have promised to continue the pressure until the plan is withdrawn.
