A controversial statement was made by GOT7’s BamBam, who referred to Haerin from NewJeans, who is a minor, as his ideal type.
As a result, fans of K-pop have discovered an old video of Sana, in which she expressed her admiration for the toddler son of a show host.
TWICE’s Sana under fire for a video from 2021
During one of their promotions in 2021, three out of nine TWICE members were on Turkids on the Block. It is a comedy late-night show in Korea. One of the band members, Chaeyoung, mentioned the show host’s child and said that he was Sana’s ideal type.
She disclosed that Sana is fond of the host, Lee Yongjin’s son, and considers him her “Isanghyeong,” or ideal type. Chaeyoung also mentioned that her bandmate once showed her a picture of the child, claiming she had found her ideal type.
Yongjin played along and suggested sending pictures of his son to Sana, which she eagerly agreed to. Towards the end of the segment, she joked that she was happy to have been a guest on the show and meet her potential father-in-law.
The video resurfaced on April 8. As a result, some K-pop fans have criticized Sana for her behavior, deeming it problematic. However, ONCEs—the band’s fandom—have come to her defense, claiming that the comments were made in jest and should not be taken too seriously.

Interestingly, when the video was initially released in 2021, it generated no controversy. However, in light of BamBam’s recent controversy, attention has been drawn to Sana’s video again.
However, TWICE’s fans are not letting one of their favorite band’s members get dragged on the internet as a pedophile for something being pulled out of proportion. They’ve come out in numbers to defend the Japanese-origin singer.
A fan tweeted, “The whole conversation is about the kind of child she would like to have… and y’all are using this as a gotcha moment and compare it to a man that was playing “ur ideal type cup” chose a minor and said “she’s too young RIGHT NOW” Y’all are disgusting…”
Another said, “Not people trying to drag Sana for finding a baby cute. These people are not seeing heaven’s gates.”
Another TWICE fan took it to herself to explain the video to people sending hate messages to Sana. She wrote, “To dumb it down for qrts: #1 Sana confessed she likes his son at the beginning of the show, #2 asked about ideal type later she brought up the kid as a joke bc she talked about “ideal type” of CHILD she likes, and #3 when seriously asked about ideal type she gave the real ans.”
As both BamBam and Sana are Japanese, a fan said that the ideal type in Japan has a non-romantic meaning compared to that in Korea.
She wrote, “It’s funny to me how people in the qrts are saying “another one” instead of coming to the realization that 이상형 (“ideal type”) has a different cultural connotation in Korean 😭 like u don’t seriously believe bambam/sana actually like minors or worse literal children right.”
Sana has been in a messy situation before too
This is not the first time the singer was in hot waters for saying something controversial. In April 2019, Sana made headlines in South Korea due to a controversial Instagram post.

She expressed her sadness about the end of the Hesei era. She wrote, “Being born during the Hesei era, it saddens me to know that it has come to an end. Hesei, you worked hard until the end. Now it is the beginning of the Reiwa era. I will face the beginning of a new era while completing the final day of Hesei.”
However, some South Korean netizens criticized her, demanding JYP Entertainment to educate their idols about history, given the delicate relationship between Japan and South Korea.
The granddaughter of a victim of Japanese imperialism expressed disappointment in Sana’s post. She called her a typical Japanese citizen who feels no sense of remorse or guilt for her nation’s government’s atrocities.
JYP Entertainment did not address the issue, but a professor at Kwangwoon University suggests that Sana’s comment was not meant to cause any disturbance as it is common for Japanese people to make references to the era they were born in to identify their current times.
The professor also speculates that Sana mentioned the end of the Hesei era to express that she is no longer part of Japan’s younger generation.
